Description

St. Thomas & St. John Historic Photos tells the story of the two islands from 1855 to the sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States in 1917. The book revolves partly around societal developments, like the harbor industry of Charlotte Amalie, trade and commerce, and the growth of tourism. And it also covers cultural and everyday aspects of life on St. Thomas and St. John.

The book, written both in English and Danish, documents, in an exciting and relevant way, a forgotten part of history. The numerous photos, many of which have never been published before, bring the reader back in time, but one can clearly recognize St. Thomas and St. John of today.

About the authors: Elizabeth Rezende, a St. Croix resident, is an anthropologist specializing in Caribbean history. Anne Walbom has been a Danish West Indian expert for many years and is the president of the Danish West Indian Society.

This book is a treasure for anyone who knows the Virgin Islands, whether as a current resident or former resident, as someone with ties to the island, or as a frequent visitor. It was done with respect for the historical importance of the photos and with an effort to convey the story of the island’s history through the selected images.

Hard Cover. 141 Pages. Black and White Photos (Historic Images).
